about

The festive spirit of the holidays can sometimes
stand in contrast to the feelings of loneliness and
loss many people experience.
This song tells the story of a guy spending
Christmas with his cat, and mulling over a lost love
despite his best attempts to move his mind beyond it.
A clarinet occasionally winds a melody between the
singer’s lines, like the way a cat provides casual
intermittent company.

lyrics

The snow is on the ground
The squirrels are shutting down
I haven’t seen the sun in quite a while
I struggle to get dressed
Your picture’s on the desk
You know I’d give the world to see you smile
In late November choirs will start to singing
Side by side in happy harmony
But anytime I hear those sleigh bells ringing
It reminds me of the way things used to be
I guess that I’ll stay home
Snuggle with my phone
Or lie down on the floor and start to cry

How many times must I walk to the fridge
To check in on the pickles and the beer
It’s just me and my cat at Christmastime
The loneliest time of the year

I turn on the TV
The only thing I see
Are movies selling plastic Christmas cheer
The news is even worse
Our country’s in reverse
It seems the fog is never gonna clear
I turn it off and try to just be present
Interrupt my thinking for a while
But I’m anxious as a hungry adolescent
Browsing through the worries in my file
At least I got ol’ Sam
He knows who I am
An animal who loves and opens cans

How many times will I look out the window
To see if your headlights are here
When I know it’s just
Me and my cat at Christmastime
The loneliest time of the year
